Course Description/Goal
Utilizing a small-group format the SIS 2009 Cardiology Nurse/Tech Symposium will feature two separate tracks which will include didactic lectures, discussions regarding evidence-based practice of cardiovascular and cardiac surgery patients; hands-on anatomical review of cardiac anatomy; updates and demonstrations on the advances in interventional and surgical technologies and techniques using cadaveric specimens (including aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement; various device deployments – stents, PFO, ASD, and various treatments of carotid stenosis); and, an expert panel of interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons who will review, discuss, debate, and defend their decisions regarding their most challenging cases.
Target Audience
The target audience for this symposium is cardiology nurses, ARNPs, PA-Cs, cath lab technicians, and allied health care professionals who manage cardiovascular patients in the cath lab, operating room, ICU, CCU, telemetry and other associated areas.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this conference, the participants will provide better patient care through an improved understanding and increased ability to:
- Provide evidence-based care to the complex cardiovascular patient
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of cardiac structures
- Incorporate the advanced techniques and technologies used in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions
- Review, compare and contrast the old and new bare metal and drug eluting stent technologies used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease
- Enhance communication skills and education of patients and patients’ families regarding their medications, and counseling of patients before and after their procedure
- Define STEMI vs. NSTEMI
- Review the national guidelines for evaluation and treatment of myocardial infarctions
- Describe the rationale and treatment of mitral and aortic balloon valvuloplasty
- Describe complications associated with mitral and aortic valvuloplasty and how to care for the patient
- Discuss the treatment of peripheral arterial disease and procedural issues
- Review pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation
- Describe the newest treatment of atrial fibrillation using ablation techniques from surgical and interventional perspectives
- Review pathophysiology of pleural effusions
- Describe treatment options and complications of pleural effusions
- Demonstrate an understanding of aortic and mitral valve anatomy and pathophysiology
- Describe surgical techniques for repair and replacement of the aortic and mitral valve
- Demonstrate an understanding of hemodynamic changes and complications after aortic and mitral valve surgery
- Apply knowledge and skills learned to effectively assist the interventional cardiologist and/or cardiac surgeon in the cath lab or operating room
